Debrecen 0 v 3 Manchester United
Kirovsky, Budapest
24th August 2005
United were celebrating their return to Champions League football proper with a solid 3 - 0 win to make it 6 - 0 on aggregate against potential trouble-causers Debrecen.
Debrecen had looked the more likely to score against the weakened United side (without Keane, etc) but the fixture was effectively over when Heinze headed in on 20 minutes - a back-post header saw him scoring from a corner.
The game might have been won comfortably sooner had Smith, playing in midfield, scored his chance just minutes earlier.
Heinze made it a hatrick of goals in the stadium in a week (he scored for Argentina there last week) with his second - a headed goal from a Ryan Giggs corner.
Richardson made sure, before struggling off the pitch to leave Man Utd with just 10 men as they had used all their substitutes!
Ronaldo played the whole game and looks to be extremely sharp - and far too clever for the Debrecen defenders!
Whilst the result went in United favour, the injuries to Richardson and Neville did not, with the first-choice right-back out for 5 weeks, and Richardson off the bench for at least 3.
