Manchester United finally grabbed their first trophy in two years!
Ronaldo was given the ultimate disappointment last season, when United outplayed Arsenal but failed to get the goal they deswerve, and went out on penalties! This year was a much happier story, with Ronaldo grabbing a goal, Rooney getting two, and Louis Saha getting one as well to make a record high-scoring Carling Cup Final.
Wigan battled hard, but even against a make-shift United midfield of O'Shea and Giggs they struggled to impose themselves.
Rooney could have put United up after eight minutes, with the ball going desperatley close from a free-kick.
On 32 minutes, Rooney made sure, with a clever through ball from Saha being met by his clever footwork and chip over stnd-in keeper John Filan.
Wigan's only real chance came in the second half, with Roberts' shot being blocked from close-range by van der Sar. After that though, it was plain sailing. Ronaldo released Gary Neville on the right, and the talented englishman played the ball square with pace to reach Saha at the back-post. His first shot was weak, but luckily the ball rebounded back to him and he was able to double United's advantage.
Ronaldo claimed a well-taken third goal from a Saha through-ball before Rooney tied it up before the hour mark with a two-yard pass into the net.
Game over, and a trophy won. Can they go on to win the league? Who knows?!
