Finland
Portugal's Euro 2008 campaign got off to a cold start in finland, although tempers ran red hot at times!
In the icy winds (ok, its not that bad just yet but it must be as bad as that if you're used to sunning yourself in Portugal all year round!) the Portuguese national side, practically dependent upon Cristiano Ronaldo, started the trail to Switzerland / austria 2008.
With Figo and Pauleta retired, Cristiano Ronaldo was one of the most experienced performers, with Scolari putting out a team of his babies against the hardened professionals of Finland, including Sami Hyppia.
On 22 minutes Jonatan Johansson stole in to shoot at goal and take Finaldn in the lead.
Despite holding on to possession well up until half-time, a lapse in Finland's play allowed Deco to play in Nuno Gomes, who smashed the ball home with ease.
Just as Cristiano and his mates were coming into the game a rash challenge cost them a player. Ricardo Costa's second yellow cut-back Portugal's attacking play, and they were forced to defend for the remaining half-hour.
They managed to hold out, but take just a point from Finland. They can take heart from their performance, and still have a bright future.
